Poll #1708225 Dying hard drive: leave on or power down?

I have a hard drive that sounds like it's dying; it's kind of whiny. None of the data on it is critical, but I would be sad if I lost it. For complicated yak-shaving reasons, it can't be backed up for another 6 weeks or so. Do I leave it on, or power it down?

I don't know which of these answers is correct.

BUT, if you power it down, put it in something moisture-proof and stick it in the freezer.

And to state the obvious: if you can somehow lower that '6 weeks or so' number, um, do so. :D
