As expected, the day has come to pass, and all of the entirely unsurprising comparisons are being made. Yes, it wasn't a hit. It was (is!) a cultural punching bag. And all of that is fine. Really.
But, see, the thing that gets my goat is articles like this
I want to eliminate my too-expensive, too-big, too-overthought laptop with a $500 or $600 laptop-lite device that does all my core tasks excellently....and I think the iPad shows that a large touchscreen device can replace much more of my laptop's functionality than I might've given it credit for.
Yes, wouldn't it be great if Apple made a handheld "laptop-lite" with a touch screen and optional hard keyboard, with an elegant, beautiful OS, that you could use to do all your core tasks like browsing the web, writing email, editing office docs, and managing your schedule, with a high-end model around $800? They could release it in 1997 and call it the APPLE FUCKING NEWTON.
