LJ public service announcement
19th-Jan-1970 03:14 am
I've been lurking around LJ for a long time, and here are the ground rules for my account. These are not just guidelines, but laws of the universe, so take note:

LJ-cuts SUCK!
"SCROLLING?OMGWTFBBQ!!!1! Scrolling is hard. Let's click instead!"
WRONG! If something is too long to read, just scroll past it. It will be fine, your computer will not explode, and you will not wear out your scroll wheel. The only reasonable exception is large images which will hose low-bandwidth users; they will be behind cuts.
Multiple cuts are USELESS!
When you use multiple LJ-cuts in a single post, they all go onto the same page, just with anchors for each cut. If you click on (hence download) one, you get them all. If you think multiple things need to go behind multiple cuts, use multiple posts instead.
Friends-locking/member-locking SUCKS!
Look, people, you're putting info out on the internet. Locking it will not keep it secret or safe. If that is your goal, don't put it on the internet.

LJ-cuts SUCK!
oh, i dunno. when you get over 50 people on your friends list, you sort of want just the headlines (hence why i want an RSS feed of it so much). also, useful for cutting NSFW content (i.e. the musclebears group).

Multiple cuts are USELESS!
yes, i agree with that. it looks cute in the summary, but is silly. also, those fun headlines you entered as the cut title are gone on the large view, confusing the user as to where your content breaks are.

Friends-locking/member-locking SUCKS!
eh, i know, but there's posting "hey, random 16yo asshole in cleveland, read this, sure" and "you can read this, but you're going to have to work at it." also, it keeps content off the recent posts page, which lots of people suck down and munge in stupid ways, especially with images posted inline.

so there! nice little bitchy rant to say hi with ;)

oh, to the cut point also: it can keep a lot of bad HTML off your friends page (from quizzes and the like). nothing like an unclosed <font> or <h1> tag fucking up the entire page to piss me off.

Not when you enter the text twice, as in:
<lj-cut text="yo momma...">yo momma:

Not my fault everyone else is WRONG.
25th-Jan-2006 03:41 pm (UTC)

you're ridiculously opinionated for a brand new lj-er

welcome! *grin*

and, yer wrong - lj cuts rock: keep yer fucking quiz results to yer self (you scored the same as everyone else anyway :P)
25th-Jan-2006 05:12 pm (UTC)
*giggle* Thanks!

Girlie, have you ever known me to not be opinionated, especially on technical/netiquette issues? Hmmmmm? ;-)

I remembered another use for LJ-cuts: spoilers. But, they do suck. Maybe if they were implemented differently (didn't require another page load) they wouldn't. If I didn't want to read your quiz results, I wouldn't read your journal. And if I don't want to read them, I'll scroll past them; it will be fine.

i'm not clear on how they could be different - the point is to hide a bit of text and require the potential viewer to agree/click to see it

hrm, is yer current comp some how sucky at handling the page loads?

and the maintainer's of the sacred LJ code are all about suggestions

so, put yer money where yer mouth is, bub! t'would be ever so sweet to see a lij frank inspired lj change

It's not so much the additional page load per se, but the fact that I have to go back and forth to get to the original page. For a mediocre example, check out my favorite community, metaquotes. As of this post, the second entry is a cut; there's almost guaranteed to be one on the first page. When you click the cut link, you don't get the same page but with the text, oh no, you get a separate page with just that entry and a bunch of comments. Did I ask for a different page or comments? I did not. Bleah.

i see it the same as, in my yahoo mail box i've got 3 messages

right now, i can only see the sub line/sender info - i have to click to see the real message

for LJ, what you're actually doing (i believe) is leaving *your* friends viewing page and delving into *their* actual journal

the lj cut is essentially saying: come into my journal proper if you wanna see

p.s.: yer cute when yer all flapping around about a basic design concept *grin*
