Evil, but cute & gay about it
...ramblings of the imperfectly innocent

Dinner tonight was Guinness-battered fish'n'chips. AB's recipe done in about a 4:1 mix of peanut oil and Crisco. Very, very tasty, though I made about 4 meals worth. Oops. I suppose it will reheat fine in the oven.

The only other foodpr0n of late has been my sudden obsession with italian sodas. Back in '99, I had a phenomenal butterscotch italian soda on my Seattle trip at a panini place just south of the Arboretum (the shop is still there). I tried recreating it a few times, but could never get it right. rainbear got me onto the DaVinci syrups back when we worked together, but it didn't take for whatever reason. On my previous trip to Cash'n'Carry, I picked up a few sugar-free syrups, gave up on anything fancy, just did a straight soda water and syrup, and totally ignored the suggested water:syrup ratio on the bottle (3:1 works for me, not 5:1). I was hooked. It's diet soda in whatever flavor I want!

Cash'n'Carry has TONS of these syrups (from DaVinci, Stasero, and Torani), including many sugar-free flavors, and they're all super cheap: the most expensive are $3.73 for a 750ml bottle. This may be because 2 of the 3 brands are made here in Seattle, but that's just a guess.

What I've tried so far (all sugar-free):
DaVinci Butterscotch
3/5. Very good flavor, slightly bitter, minimal aftertaste.
DaVinci Caramel
1/5. Unconvincing flavor, tastes pretty bad. Works OK in coffee.
DaVinci Raspberry
3/5. Good flavor, if not exciting. Slightly tart (a good thing!).
DaVinci Peach
3/5. Good, not as rich/deep as I'd like. Odd aftertaste.
Stasero Irish Crème
5/5. Excellent flavor, genuinely creamy aftertaste. Outstanding.
Stasero English Toffee
4/5. Very good, slightly bitter overtones.

More reviews at some point, for sure.

it looks fine when i click into see the actual post

but, in a listing of all my friend's posts - it's a bit wonky

thought the cute mr frank might like to a) geek a bit to fix it or b) have another thing to bitch about

Why not both? :-)

geeksdoitbetter's style or LJ's code was slightly mangling the HTML in my post, so it was screwing up (damn LJ!). So I fixed the HTML to something more machine-parseable, and it looks fine now.

As an aside, this post was #180 on your friends page! How do you have time to read all of that (admittedly good) stuff?

yay! it's all purty now, you rock

~grin~ i totally don't read my real friend's page

i have several friends groups set up

one's call "if you only have a minute" and has all my very favorite people/sweeties - this is never more than one page long for all the new stuff

another's called "folks i read" and has a broader section of people who i'd like to keep current with but who i won't feel sad about if i miss something

then there's a group just for the favorite communities i read (not all comms i'm subbed to) - these have got such high traffic that having them mixed with real people is ridiculous

so, being friended by me is absolutely no guarentee i'm reading yer journal ~grin~

go here - it's all sortsa joyful - http://www.livejournal.com/friends/editgroups.bml
