Back in radio range

Mom is flying back to PA tomorrow morning; she's staying at my brother Joe's place tonight, partly because it was his birthday we've been celebrating, and partly because he's the early bird who gets to drive her to the airport.

This was actually an extraordinarily pleasant visit. Seriously! Even when the ferries from Bainbridge Island were running 30 minutes late because of the Chilly Hilly (um, hello all you hot people in your hot gear, I'll just be over here staring), and we got to church more than halfway through, she said "it worked out well." Who is this person?!? She has mellowed out a *lot* and I hope it stays this way. Over the whole 5 days, there was just the barest hint of drama that I shed like water off a duck's back. I may have to start looking forward to spending time with family. Who knew?!?

We had a great time: dinner at the Metropolitan Grill, had a grand time at the super-fancy Gold Class Cinema, did a tour of Theo Chocolate (surprise hit: cherry/pink peppercorn), had fun on the Island, went shopping, hung out, watched movies...

Speaking of which, if you have not yet seen it, the next movie you rent needs to be Stranger Than Fiction. This was the best movie I have seen in quite a while. My review might be a bit biased because when this movie was described to me, I thought it was Bedtime Stories (turned out to be decent to meh; 2.5 stars), so my hopes were not that high, but I was very wrong. Don't make the same mistake I did.

Yes, it says "Will Ferrell" on the cover: rent it anyway. Especially if you are yesthattom or kev_bot.

What else, what else...

Class is going mostly well. The material is at a very good level, but I had severely misunderestimated the sheer amount of time that things were going to take outside of the class itself. On an ongoing basis, there is just no way that I will be able to have a full time job, go to class, have a life, *and* continue to go to the gym. So the current plan is to try to drop as much weight as I can until September, and do my best to stay in a holding pattern until I get my Masters. Assuming that I get into the program, of course.

My cell phone died. Well, the USB port died, so I can't charge the battery anymore. It was time for renewal anyway, so I'd been looking around at a new phone anyway. I had fully intended to walk out of the store with a Storm 2, but there was just too much I didn't like about it. I ended up going with a Motorola Droid, which I am still demoing (about 20 days left to decide). There's a lot to like about it (multitasking, very fast and smooth, great UI, and simply the best display on any cell phone in the US right now, and many other items omitted here for sanity), but there are also several annoyances (battery life is mediocre but not terrible, possible call quality issues, sub-par Pandora client, Google Overlords). We shall see. I'll probably end up keeping it, because there's nothing else I like more, either now or on the horizon.

Oh, and since this recent event is over (see 1st paragraph), and my apartment is now fairly clean and presentable, I can start being social again and having people over. If you're local, and we haven't connected in a while, please feel free to get in contact if I don't beat you to it. Just as soon as I recover the phone numbers from my BlackBerry.

Have a great day!
