I'm so spoiled. Just about a mile south of me is Uwajimaya, a *huge* Japanese supermarket. That doesn't begin to do it justice, of course, because in addition to the Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Philippine, and Pacific Island food, there's tons of books, shirts, trinkets, and other general merchandise. It's insane. Every time I visit I want to take home the entire store; I could spend an entire paycheck there no problem.
Today's haul included the obligatory half-dozen or so boxes of Pocky (peach/vanilla, white chocolate, chocolate almond, pineapple, coconut, and banana custard), several bags of hard candy, pepper/garlic chips, fish-flavor chips, "white soda" candy (can't wait to see what that tastes like), peach cream cakes, lychee (both fresh(!) and canned), durian(!) popsicles, a few pouches of "energy" (like a powerbar in gel form), cane sugar drink, chrysanthemum drink, aloe vera drink, starfruit juice.
The best part was dinner: $6 for a whole crab roll (real crab, not imitation) and a half spicy shrimp roll. So, so good.
In other food news, the topic of summer fruit has been bubbling in my mind for a while, and I think I've come up with a good recipe to try at some point. I'm envisioning a rich white cake with a layer of cooked peaches+bourbon (ooo, maybe SoCo), frosted with sweetened mascarpone+whipped cream, and softened peach slices for decoration. Hmmm, the mascarpone may be a bit much. Maybe some coconut instead. Ooooooh, this bears thinking about...
